WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

June 9th, 2009

hey all, long time again. sorry, been super busy with all my jobs and trying to get stuff done for comic-con…yeah i’ll be there…not at a table or booth but running around…actually that’s not entirely true, i may be helping out at the cartoon art museums booth for a little while…if they let me.

but yeah like I said i’ve been busy lately working on all kinds of stuff. such as new comic projects, a revamp of moe i’ve been working on and it looks rad! and, some of you out there don’t know, I am a part-time after school teacher that works with middle school students…and it’s the end of the year nightmare, we just finished our very first animated short, i’ll be posting that up soon. but for right now just wanted to stop by and say hello…also here are some shots of my work area and me working at it…and a teaser page of the revamped moe….enjoy!

where all the magic happens…and where i sleep

the drawing table/computer desk…i don’t have the luxury of having two separate areas…oh but one day i will and it will be glorious!

the wall of deadlines and character designs…whenever i work on new stuff i like to keep the character designs next to me…this is redesigns of MOE characters.

me posing for a work shot hahahaha!

and here it is…the new page of MOE…there are others but i’m gonna be taking my time getting them just the way i want them to look. if you’b like to take a closer look at it, just click on the image.

alright all, that’s all for now. take care. bye.

Check it Out!

April 26th, 2009

the book, Valedictorian USA, written by Stephen Hines and illustrated by yours truely, just got an pretty awesome review over at Comic Related.

check it out:

“he first book on our radar is a very thought evoking mini-comic called Valedictorian U.S.A. written by Stephen Hines and illustrated by Daniel “Basement Dan” Salcido. Don’t be fooled by the size of this sleeping giant. This thing is jam packed with the dark satirical wit that Hines will soon be known for. Dark humor laced with intellectual social commentary that looks at the world of cut-throat academic competition camouflaged as a reality t.v. show/game show.

Stephen mixes in what on the surface appears to be stereotypical characters but which are actually just another level of his outlook and creative breakdown of the social clicks found in the corridors and class rooms of our nation’s schools as he spins a tale of nine high school seniors competing on live television for an all expense paid, once in a life time opportunity to attend the college of their choice.

Valedictorian U.S.A. manages to successfully lampoon shows like Survivor, Big Brother, and Fear Factor in a no holds bar fashion that leaves you more entertained than any combination of these type shows you can think of.”

bye for now.

What’s Been Going On…

March 26th, 2009

hello all…it’s been a month since my last post. so here’s whats been happening and why i haven’t had time to update lately…

1) stupid computer!!! - so my computer was horribly molested by asshole virus’s and had to be sent in to fix…which by the eff my experience with geek squad. my first day there, when i dropped my computer off, that was okay. i had some nice people helping me out…where the fuck did they go after that!?! they had my computer for ten days, had me come in twice to bring them my external hard drive and system default disk’s, why couldn’t they just say they needed all my shit and it would have been one trip and a lot easier. but any how, my computer has been back for about two weeks and is running fine. so that’s good.

2) wondercon 09 - so wondercon ‘09 was at the end of february and i had to spend that weekend computerless, so it was fan boy time! had a good time, meet some folks and some things could be in motion…more on that later on, possibly april.

3) busy as fuck! - so yeah once i got my computer back i had to get back to work of some projects…on top of work my two day jobs (if you didn’t know, i work as a cartoon and animation teacher for a middle school after school program and on the weekends i work retail (balls)). so yeah, i should be having two new books this summer, as well as my work will be placed in a couple zines and shit who knows what else, i mean, it’s only march, there’s still a whole lot of year left and i like to stay busy.

so yeah that’s pretty much whats been going on…now that we’re all caught up and can go back to work. oh and by the way…southern arizona fans, i will be in az visiting my family and friends from april 2nd - 8th. i’m thinking about having a drawing jam while im out there. if your down to join in, email me and i’ll start making plans. take care all. bye.

recap of my weekend

February 22nd, 2009

this was a crazy badass weekend. let us recap shall we.

Friday 20th:

me at the vip viewing of the Watchmen exhibit at the cartoon art museum. at this event i had the privilege of making an ass of myself trying to say hi to Blair Butler of G4TV’s Fresh Ink( i was choking on a cracker as i tried to say hi). Also in attendance was Dave Gibbons, the illustrator of the Watchmen comics. great night.

Saturday 21st:
I went and saw Murder by Death at the bottom of the hill. it was an awesome concert, if you haven’t heard this bands music, please, please check it out, it’s fuckin awesome. just picture what you might be hearing during a hanging at dawn while drinking at a saloon. good times.
the plus side to this show was because of this:

this is a design i did that MBD bought to use for merch. they made canvas bags and are selling them on this tour they’re on. here’s the original design mashed up with the canvas bag.

i’m so honored to know that they used my image and that they enjoy it. they are really nice, good people, plus they put on an amazing live show. if you guys should go see them live buy one of the bags or any other of their awesome merch. also, if you do see them live, say hello for me.

it’s time to relax now. actually it’s time to get back to work on my projects. take care all and talk with you soon. bye.

A Night With Watchmen

February 21st, 2009

i will have more on this later, but thought i would drop a quick line. earlier tonight i was at the cartoon art museum for a special press and v.i.p. event to see their Watchmen exhibit for the release of the movie.

needless to say, had some fun, saw some folks i know and some that i made a complete ass of myself to meet and the main event was that i meet David Gibbons, the illustrator of the Watchmen comics…good night. a little drunk still and have a lot of work to get down by morning…so yeah i’m gonna end this a little short and will add more sunday.

i would say tomorrow, but well, murder by death is playing, and they bought one of my images to use for merch and it’d be nice to see if they are available on this tour or not, plus they’re an awesome fucking band to see live. any how, now i’m just drunk and rambling. ok, bye.
